HOW DOES
HYDROTHERAPY
BENEFIT REHABILITATION
Hydrotherapy is a form of physical therapy that uses the properties of water to aid in rehabilitation for many injuries, disabilities and chronic conditions. Here are a few ways in which hydrotherapy can beneficial:
-
Reduced weight bearing: The buoyancy of water reduces the amount of weight bearing on joints, which can be especially beneficial for individuals recovering from injuries or surgeries to the lower extremities. This reduction in weight bearing allows for greater range of motion and less pain during exercise.
-
Increased resistance: Water provides natural resistance, which can help to improve muscle strength and endurance. This can be especially beneficial for individuals recovering from injuries or surgeries to the upper extremities or for those looking to improve overall fitness.
-
Improved flexibility: The warmth of the water can help to increase blood flow and relax muscles, which can improve flexibility and range of motion. Hydrotherapy can also be used to help with stretching exercises.
-
Increased cardiovascular fitness: Hydrotherapy can be used to improve cardiovascular fitness by performing exercises that target the major muscle groups. The resistance provided by the water can help to increase heart rate and improve cardiovascular health.
-
Reduced pain and swelling: The buoyancy of the water can help to reduce pain and swelling, which can be beneficial for individuals recovering from injuries or surgeries. The warmth of the water can also help to increase blood flow, which can further reduce pain and swelling.
-
Better balance and coordination: The instability of the water can help to improve balance and coordination by challenging the body's sense of balance. This can be beneficial for those looking to improve overall balance and coordination.

Overall, Hydrotherapy can be beneficial for rehabilitation as it can help to reduce pain and swelling, improve flexibility and range of motion, increase cardiovascular fitness and muscle strength, and improve balance and coordination. It can be beneficial for a wide range of conditions and injuries and can be especially beneficial for older adults and individuals with disabilities.
